Just got back from a little jaunt down to Charleston. It was our second family excursion to the city, and we had a blast. Family vacations for us generally revolve around food, and this one was no exception. Charleston is known for its Lowcountry cuisine, and we greatly enjoyed the restaurants that we visited. At the last minute we decided to leave a day early, and thought we'd walk by the only restaurant we'd made reservations to- Husk. Our reservations were for lunch on Thursday, and it was Tuesday night when we got into town. We were hungry, and Poogan's Porch is right next door to Husk. It was rated number 6 in the city by TripAdvisor, so we decided to give them a try. We took a gamble that Poogan's Porch would be able to seat us without reservations, and luckily for us they said they could seat us on the back patio. It was perfect seating for us- just outside the door and tucked a bit so that we didn't feel in the way. Iced drinks and a nice breeze helped to make it comfortable in the summer heat. The basket of biscuits didn't arrive until the entrees, but they were worth the wait. Light and fluffy, with a slight sweetness to them. Imagine Angel biscuits with wings. SO good that we asked for a second basket! I ordered the Pan Roasted Mahi with Pulled pork & goat cheese ravioli, tomato ham hock broth, greens, and charred cream corn. Yum! I don't think my corn was actually charred in any way, but it was delicious. I even ate all the greens, which normally I would avoid. My husband order the Pan Seared Jumbo Scallops with Apple-wood smoked bacon grits, wilted spinach, and crawfish buerre blanc. I wish I could give an accurate firsthand account, but he was in raptures over it and wouldn't let me taste it. My older son ordered the Plantation Fried Chicken Stuffed with smoked gouda, spicy collards & country ham, whipped potatoes, green beans, and drizzled with a texas pete jus. Lucky for me he shared and I can say that it was delicious. I'm especially fond of green beans that still have a crispness to them, and these were perfect. My younger son just ordered the kids chicken fingers, so I didn't take pictures, but the chicken was breaded chicken breast strips with homemade potato chips. Everything was delicious. We decided to top it all off with two desserts to share. Well, the idea was to share them but my husband decided after one bite that the peanut butter pie was all his, so my older son and I shared the coconut key lime pie. It was perfect. Poogan's Porch is more "shabby chic" when compared to the upscale modern restoration its neighbor Husk embodies. The furniture and decoration are all a little worn, and the air conditioner seemed to struggle to keep the interior cool in the summer heat. We actually ate here again our last night in town with seating inside, and I think I liked the back patio table better. The final notes on Poogan's Porch will be in my Day 3 post.
